The community of Dayton, NV, is located in Lyon County, northeast of Carson City along US 50. Dayton covers a land area of almost 32 square miles on the western end of the Twenty-Six Mile Desert, at a bend in the Carson River. It’s home to a population of more than 9,000 people.
After the first name of Ponderers Rest, by 1860 the town was occupied mostly by Chinese miners and called “China Town” in the census. The name Dayton was officially adopted in 1861, named for local surveyor John Day. A century later, Dayton gained notoriety in 1961 for the film The Misfits, notable for the last movie appearances of Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. Dayton has more recently grown with the expansion of residential development on the east side of the Carson River.
